BREAST AUGMENTATION
Out patient breast augmentation involves surgical placement of an implant behind each breast above or below the pectoral muscle to increase its volume and enhance its shape. This procedure can make you feel more confident about your appearance. Many women choose to have their breasts enlarged in order to satisfy their own desire for a fuller bustline. Your breasts may not have developed to a size that meets your expectations, or one breast may be significantly smaller than the other. Often, after weight loss, childbirth and breast feeding, or as a result of aging, the breasts lose volume and their shape changes. Breast augmentation can enhance your breast size and shape, and give you a more proportional figure.
Breast augmentation can be performed at any age after the breasts are fully developed. Prior to surgery, a complete medical history is taken in order to evaluate your general health. A thorough examination of the breasts determines the most effective surgical approach. The physician will describe the type of anesthesia to be used, the procedure, what results might realistically be expected and the possible risks.
Once the decision has been made to go ahead a mammogram is required (if you are over 35 years of age). Preoperative instructions often include the elimination of certain drugs which contain aspirin in order to minimize the possibility of excess bleeding. Pictures are taken on the morning prior to surgery.
Following surgery, the patient is fitted for a customized contour bandage. Pain connected with the procedure is minimal to moderate and is controlled with oral medication. Antibiotics are prescribed to prevent infection. Instructions for the day following surgery include bed rest and limited activities. The physician determines when normal activities can be resumed; however, strenuous exercises and overhead lifting must be avoided for several weeks. This breast bandage is worn for one week and reduces pain and discomfort. It also allows patients to return to work in 2-3 days.
All sutures are placed under the skin. Numbness around the treated area may occur, but this condition is usually temporary. Swelling and discoloration disappear in a few days, and scars from the incisions under the breasts, although permanent, fade significantly with time. Complications of infection and slow healing are rare; however, there are certain inherent risks connected with every surgical procedure which should be thoroughly discussed with the physician. Patients can minimize complications by carefully following directions given by the physician. In some cases in which the breast becomes too firm due to the formation of scar tissue, a second procedure may be necessary. This, however, is unusual.
"Thanks to you, I'm no longer flat chested and I love the outfits I am wearing now."

After breast augmentation surgery patients return to work within 2 to 3 days, depending on your job. Vigorous activities, especially arm movement, may be restricted for one to two weeks. Sexual activity should be avoided for at least the first week following surgery. After that, care must be taken to be extremely gentle with your breasts for at least the next month. Your breast augmentation surgery will make your breasts fuller and enhance their shape. You will find it easier to wear certain styles of clothing. Like many women who have had breast augmentation, you may feel a boost in self-confidence.
